Interview with Our Top 2011 O-Level Students |
Interviewer: How do you feel right now after receiving your results?
Jie Kai (JK): I am pleasantly surprised. It is an out-of-this-world feeling. I was beginning to feel dejected as the names were being read our and my name had still not appeared. I had almost given up hopes of being one of the top scorers in school.
Tan Jie Kai

Hwee Sze (HS): I am very happy and did not expect to make it to the list of top scorers. I was very nervous as names were being read out and friends who had normally performed well academically had already gone up on stage and I was starting to feel a little disappointed.
Tan Hwee Sze

Ning Jie (NJ): I am relieved and happy. I was hoping to be among the top few students in Swiss. Being able to top the cohort is a bonus.

Akash (A): At first, I was happy but it was not as satisfying shortly after. I am hoping to go to NJC but with my results, I don’t think I am able to; that’s why I am not feeling satisfied. It is not entirely disappointing as attaining eight distinctions is quite an achievement.
Akash Saha

A BREAKTHROUGH – a story of how Sharon Shu Huang Ying (Sec 5N1/2011) overcame her difficulties to take the GCE O Level examination. |
Life has not been easy for Sharon – she faced many difficulties, especially so in her final 5N year just before the national examination. The most serious was anxiety, especially when communicating with people. As a result, she was unable to approach her teachers or friends for help with her work because she would be overwhelmed by anxiety.

2011 GCE N-Level Examination Results |

Swiss is elated with the release of the 2011 GCE N-level examination results which 85 Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) and 39 Secondary 4 Normal (Technical) students achieved. Our Normal (Technical) students were offered 6 subjects, including Science, at the beginning of their upper secondary curriculum, while students in the Normal (Academic) stream were offered 6 subjects including a Craft & Technology subject in Art, Design and Technology at O-level or Food and Nutrition, with the more outstanding students offering O-level subjects like the Mother Tongue Languages.
We are proud to share that 95.3% of our Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) students are promoted to Sec 5 Normal stream. This is the best result Swiss has attained in the past 3 years.
Out of the 10 subjects offered for the Normal (Academic) cohort, 5 subjects obtained 100% passes. 9 subjects had percentage passes at or above the national average while 7 subjects had percentage distinctions above the national average. 7 out of the 10 subjects showed an improvement in the distinction rates from 2010, whereas the percentage passes for 8 subjects improved from 2010. Our distinction rates had more than quadrupled for Combined Humanities and exceeded by 12 times for Science (Chemistry/Biology). We had also doubled the distinction rates for Mathematics Syllabus A and Science (Physics/Chemistry).

The top Swiss student in the Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) stream is Tan Guan Yuan of 4N1, scoring a total of 4 Grade 1s in English Language Syllabus A, Combined Humanities, Mathematics Syllabus A, and Science (Physics/Chemistry). We also celebrate the achievements of Tan Cheng Keat of 4N2 who also scored 4 Grade 1s.
Swiss saw an uplifting improvement in the percentage of Secondary 4 Normal (Technical) students who obtained all 6 subject passes, hitting a record of 79.5%. Of these students, 2 obtained 5 As and 3 obtained 4 As.
Of the 9 subjects offered for the Normal (Technical) cohort, 5 subjects obtained 100% passes. All subjects had percentage passes AND distinction rates above the national averages. 8 out of the 9 subjects showed an improvement in the distinction rates from 2010, whereas the percentage passes for all subjects improved from 2010. 6 out of the 9 subjects attained a threefold improvement in terms of distinction rates.

The top Swiss student in the Secondary 4 Normal (Technical) stream is Koh Jun Hao, scoring a total of 5 distinctions in Basic Chinese, Mathematics Syllabus T, Science Syllabus T, Design & Technology and Computer Applications. Another noteworthy performance comes from Felicia Khoh Qi Hui who also scored 5 distinctions.

Words from Our Top 2011 N-Level Students |
|

|
I want to glorify God and with my results, I will go to Sec 5 and continue to do my best. My passion for pursuing excellence in everything I do is the reason for my success.
I would like to thank God, teachers, friends and family. I would especially like to thank Mr Daniel Teguh and Miss Tan Annie for helping me with difficult problems and being so patient with me. I would like to thank my church friends and my classmates Lester, Qichen, Wilson, Shaun and Jun Xiang for helping, standing by and praying for me. Last but not least, I would like to thank my Mom, Dad, brother and sister too!

The two school values of Passion and Resilience are the most important reasons for my success. We should have passion in the things we do, be it academic or non-academic. We should be resilient and persevere no matter how tough it is. Lastly, it is a must to believe in ourselves. That’s the key to success!
The support that I have comes mainly from my CCA juniors who always encourage me to press on. Besides my juniors, there are a few teachers whom I would like to thank. Miss Ng Poh Keow and Miss Jacqueline Lam who always gave me their support and care during the “war” period, Mr Erman who taught me a lot and asked me to give my best shot in everything I did and lastly Mr Damian and Mdm Norliati who were my FT and Co-FT, for always providing me with guidance and having faith in everything I did.

Be resilient and do not stress yourself out with your studies. Play hard and study hard. If you are stressed or discouraged, find a healthy way to relieve your stress. For me, my passion is in playing basketball and this helps me manage the pressures of the graduating year. Set your targets and aim high.
I would like to accord special thanks to Mr Samuel Lim, Mdm Chok Shuk Yin, Mdm Nafisah, Miss Tan Mee Han, Mr Darren Tan, Miss Toh Hui Jing, Mr Teng Lip Koon and Mdm Wan.

The most important thing is to pay attention in class and work hard at your studies. For example, we must be prepared to sacrifice - play less computer games and watch less TV programmes.
My main sources of support come from my close friends, tuition teachers and school teachers, Mr Samuel Lim, Mdm Chok Shuk Yin, Mdm. Nafisah, Miss Tan Mee Han and Miss Toh Hui Jing. Special thanks go to Mr Samuel Lim, for being very caring towards us and spending lots of time with us; Mdm Chok, for putting in lots of effort to teach us; and Mdm Nafisah, for being so caring, friendly and supportive.

Interview with Doreen See Pei Ying (Sec 4T1 / 2011) |
Doreen is an admirable girl with resilience and strong determination. She might have grown up in a single-parent family, but she always maintains a positive outlook to her studies, her family situation and her life. Against all odds, she obtained 4 distinctions in the 2011 GCE N level examination.
Q: How do you feel right now after receiving your results?
A: I feel extremely happy about my results, especially my Mathematics, Science and Mother Tongue Language subjects. Mathematics has been my weakest subject since primary school but I managed to score a distinction for it. I really want to thank Mr Samuel Lim and Mdm Chok for helping me in the subject. I’m slightly disappointed with my English Language since I didn’t get the grade I wanted.
Q: Was it easy for you to have come this far? Why?
A: It was definitely not easy. My mum passed away when I was in Primary 1 and my auntie is taking care of me. My dad is the sole breadwinner and works very hard to provide for me. Sometimes, I wish my mother is still around as I just hope to talk to someone. While my dad cares greatly for me, some things are easier said to mothers, I guess. My house is also rented to foreigners and it can be difficult to find privacy or to study.
I also had to try very hard to balance my studies with other school commitments like CCA. To ease my family’s burden, I help out with the household chores as well. In upper secondary, as I took up more leadership positions, I had to manage my time better so that I can cope with all these expectations. It can be really tiring doing this balancing act at times but I tell myself never to give up so as not to let down those who care about me.
Q: How did you manage to overcome these challenges?
A: I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family, teachers and close friends. Part of my motivation comes from my dad who works hard so that he can help me succeed in life and I don’t wish to disappoint him. My godmother and her family, whom I am very close to, have also encouraged me greatly with their love and concern.
I especially wish to thank my Form Teacher, Mr Samuel Lim. He is someone who cares for all his students and has always gone the extra mile for us. For instance, he helped to co-ordinate night-study and tuition sessions with ex-Sec 4 students to help us in our studies. Beyond academic studies, he also tries his best to strengthen the class bonding by organising outings during the holidays. I feel really touched by all that Mr Lim has done for us.
Q: If you were to encourage someone who is experiencing similar circumstances, what advice would you give to him or her?
A: You must have a never-give-up attitude, no matter what life throws at you. Do your very best and eventually, believe that things will be better. Also, think about the happy things and don’t focus on the negative. Lastly, choose your friends wisely – friends with a good heart influence you positively while wrong friends will lead you down the wrong path.
It is not often that a teacher comes across a student who leaves an indelible impression on him or her. Doreen is one such student who has risen above the challenges life has brought her way and has achieved so much, yet never allows success to cloud her judgment or shape her identity.
by Mr Samuel Lim (Form Teacher)

Interview with Khairunnisa Bte Abdul Ghani (Sec 4T1/2011) |
Despite her learning difficulties in reading, spelling and speaking, she graduated with 3 distinctions in the 2011 GCE N-level examination. An unyielding spirit, a never-give-up attitude, a persevering character.
Khairusnnisa is indeed an exemplary young lady who is held in high regard by both peers and teachers. When confronted with failure or disappointment, she was able to rise above the circumstances and always found lessons to learn from the experience.
by Mr Samuel Lim (Form Teacher)
Q: How do you feel right now after receiving your results?
A: I feel really happy! I don’t normally score well in class; usually a borderline pass or fail in all the subjects. My Mother Tongue Language (MTL) results were unexpected. My mother is a MTL teacher and even though she has high expectations of me, she is still very encouraging. Dad is very positive in his remarks and has high expectations of me too. For Art, although I was late in handing in my work but it was always up to expectation. For Computer Applications, I really consulted my teachers and it helped! For Science, I studied really hard but did not get a Grade A. These are the three subjects I scored Grade A in. Nevertheless, overall I am still very happy!
Q: Was it easy for you to have come this far? Why?
A: It was definitely not easy! I studied really hard (two hours for every subject), sleeping at 1 or 2 am every day. Whenever my dad saw that I was still awake, he would ask me to go to bed. I was really stressed out one or two months before the N-level examination and I wanted to give up. I am slow because I want to be a perfectionist; I know I cannot be perfect in everything but I cannot help being a perfectionist.
Q: How did you manage to overcome these challenges?
A: I may be slow but I am willing to make an effort on my part as well as to seek help from my teachers. I would consult my teachers till 5 pm every day.
I am dyslexic; I don’t really like books. After Sec 1 and 2, I started to enjoy reading. I get confused with ‘b’ and ‘d’; ‘then’ and ‘that’; ‘bed’ and ‘bad’. I attended lessons at Bridge Learning to help me overcome dyslexia. I would do some exercises such as throwing some balls, performing verbal and kinetic exercises (read A1, B2, C3,…and throwing balls at the same time), playing badminton, sharing, reading the newspapers and sharing about the world. I cannot read well in both English and MT and always feel bad that my siblings and cousins do very well, compared to me. I kept very quiet when I was in Primary 1 to 4 as I could not read. I always said ‘er...er…er’ and could not read.
Q: What are your sources of support or inspiration?
A: My parents, Mr Samuel Lim, Bridge Learning teachers and my aunt. My parents are always so encouraging. I am grateful that they have been sending me to Bridge Learning since Primary 3. If they have not sent me for the specialised test in which my dyslexia was diagnosed, I would not be where I am now. When I was in Sec 1, I was scared of my Form Teacher, Mr Lim. I always had a female Form Teacher. Mr Lim is an amazing teacher; he has been a supportive teacher all these years! Teachers Li Fen, Ai Ling and the Principal, Ms Ng from Bridge Learning have helped me overcome my dyslexic problem over a period of six years. I had no confidence to speak as people would laugh. Now, I can speak well and I can spell better. My aunt is always encouraging me to be patient.
Q: If you were to encourage someone who is experiencing similar circumstances, what advice would you give to him or her?
A: DON’T GIVE UP! If you do, you are a failure. Tell yourself you can do it! With the certificate, it can get you far! Think of what you want to do in future. For me, I will take up ASEAN Culinary Arts in ITE, Early Childhood in Higher Nitec and then in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. I want to be a teacher!
